Females contribute to almost half of humanity and, therefore, half of its capabilities. A flourishing society with sustainable human development today can never be imagined without the active participation of women. Gone are the days when women were considered inferior or the weaker sex.
Humanity, in its journey of making the civilization more inclusive, strive to make gender equality a fundamental right, this has given rise to the perspective of ‘gender-fluid’ or ‘gender neutral’. Fortunately, this had led to the rise of ‘girl power’ so as to evolve into an era when, if not superior, women are considered at par with men.
The United Nation’s theme for the international women’s day 2019 is “Think equal, build smart, and innovate for change”. This is another step in acknowledging women’s efforts towards the growth of a civilization. In a broader sense, the apex body wants nations to promote gender equality and empower women.
The world has come a long way in giving women their rightful share of opportunities. While women are occupying the most important government offices, some of the most reputed companies are being managed by them too. Seeing a lady officer, in a combat role is getting more common.
Women empowerment has given the much-needed courage to the women of some of the most patriarchal geographies. She is now aware of her consent and can fight for her rights. The recent ‘me too campaigns’ are a testimony to the rising ‘girl power’.
A lot has been done and a lot more is needed. The gender divide has been shortened but it still exists. The recent trends and the latest developments point out an under-representation of women in the field of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and design. These dimensions if remain untouched by women, prevent the development of gender-responsive innovations.
The modern approaches in science and technology focus on artificial intelligence, mobile shopping or banking, bitcoins, virtual reality and other internet things, It is therefore of great importance that women’s ideas and thoughts influence the development of these modalities as these may become the building blocks of the future societies.
The aim of having a “planet 50-50” by 2030 can only be achieved if we are open to supporting major transformative shifts, integrated approaches and inclusive decisions from kitchens to boardrooms. Additionally, we must act together to put an end to various forms of gender violence and sexism, and secure access to quality health, resources, education and participation in the decision making bodies for girls and women.
This women’s day, let us join hands together to acknowledge the vitality of women in our lives. Let’s pledge to foster a society inclusive of all. Let us voice their concerns and make them realize that their opinions do matter. Let us fill the gender divide bit by bit.
Happy International Women’s Day 2019.
